Upgrading Flat Panelled Doors using Card or Veneer System

INTRODUCTION

Doors must have a panel thickness of 6mm or more. When the rails and stiles are 30 to 34mm thick, coat the rails, stiles and beads with an Envirograf HW Coating system. When the rails and stiles are 35mm thick or more only beads have to be coated. Normally only the risk side of the door is treated. However if the door is within a corridor both sides of the door should be treated.

PREPARATION

Ensure that the surface is sound, clean, dry and free from dirt, grease, wax, loose material and surface contamination.

Sand down. Dust down. Ensure working area is clean, dry and warm.

PAINTED DOORS

Cut the carded Intumescent material using a sharp knife to suit the panels.

Prime bare timber panels with Envirograf Stabond. Allow to dry (approximately 1 hour).

Apply Envirograf Product 46 - IA Adhesive, with a comb applicator to the panel and to the rough side of the Intumescent Paper and adhere together. Leave to dry overnight. (Allow one litre per 4 m2 Intumescent material).

On the beading, rails and stiles apply the following as applicable:

  • Apply 1 coat of HWAP/WB Adhesion Primer at 12 m2 per litre, to previously painted surfaces.

  • Apply 2 coats of HW01 White Intumescent coating at 8 m2 per litre, per coat.

  • Apply 1 or 2 coats of WBI Protective Topcoat at 10 m2 per litre (matt, satin or gloss). White or chosen colour.

VARNISHED DOORS

Cut the ES/MP/V Veneered Intumescent material with a sharp knife to suit the panels.

Prime bare timber panels with Envirograf Stabond. Allow to dry (approximately 1 hour).

Apply Envirograf Product 46 - IA Adhesive, with a comb applicator to the panel and to the back of the veneered Intumescent and adhere together. Leave overnight to dry. (Allow one litre per 4 m2 Intumescent material).

The veneer can then be stained if required.

On the beading, rails and stiles apply the following as applicable:

  • Apply 1 coat of HWAP/WB Adhesion Primer at 12 m2 per litre to previously coated surfaces.

  • Apply 2 coats of HW02 Clear Intumescent coating at 8 m2 per litre, per coat.

  • Apply 1 or 2 coats of WBI Protective Topcoat at 10 m2 per litre (matt, satin or gloss). Clear or chosen colour.

NEW DOORS

For new panelled doors being made from solid timber, Intumescent material ES/MP can be adhered and sandwiched between the two panels, using IA Adhesive to upgrade the panels to 30 minutes fire protection. (Allow one litre of IA adhesive for each 4 m2 Intumescent material)

NOTES

All Fire Doors must be fitted with Intumescent seals.

Envirograf Product 100 - Fire & Smoke Seals for rebated doors.

Envirograf Product 69 - Surface Mounted Fire & Smoke Seals for around the frames (No routing necessary).

Envirograf Product 71 - Door locks, hinges etc must be fitted with Intumescent Hinge, Lock and Closer Protection.

The above method will upgrade suitable doors to 30 and 60 minute fire rating to achieve compliance with BS 476 Part 22
